Travel and accommodation
We provide simple mattress accommodation prior to Birkebeinerrittet in Rena (NOK 399,-). Bus transport is also available for these events, from Oslo and Lillehammer to Rena.

Buses from Oslo and Lillehammer to Rena is available for booking through your My Page from two weeks prior to the race. Booking must be made before 20.00 the evening before the race, or you can buy your ticket in Håkons Hall, Lillehammer.

Oslo airport, GardermoenIf you are arriving by car, please view recommended driving pattern in Rena and Lillehammer.
Travelling by car from Oslo is not difficult. Follow the E6 north. If you are going to Rena, take the exit to Elverum, and follow the road signs from there. Rena is approximately 2,5 hours from Oslo. Travelling to Lillehammer - follow the E6 until Lillehammer is on your right, this takes about two hours.

Bus
Preliminary information 2021
Bus transport is available for participants (incl. bikes) from Lillehammer and Oslo to the start at Rena in the morning and return after the race. You can pre-order bus transport from August 7th, through My Page before 20.00 the day before you depart at the latest. There is no refund for unused tickets.
Cycle transport are included when ordering bus
Cycles are transported on lorries at your own risk. We advise you to protect your cycle with fabric or bubble wrap. -
Mattress accommodation Rena
Due to Covid-19 - mattress accommodation Rena will not open until we have more information about the situation in 2021. Information will be given spring 2021.
Mattress accommodation in Rena
Accommodation in Rena is available in schools and other suitable buildings for Birkebeinerrittet.
The mattress is provided, but you must bring your own sleeping bag, and sheet. In the evening, you can purchase food at, or close by, the facility.
If you wish to stay in the same facility as a friend, or you team, make sure you all choose the same site.
Breakfast is included in the fee.

Race rules
The race is run according to the UCI's MTB rules and NCF's laws and regulations. In addition there are also special regulations for Birkebeinerrittet.
Note: Additional rules for the Elite classes and UltraBirken cycle
General traffic regulations and road signs must be observed. Please pay attention to the environment, the public and co-racers. Parts of the route will be closed for ordinary traffic, and supporter vehicles are not permitted.- Participants in the age classes may use the service stations.
- The organizers reserve the right to stop late racers from completing the race.
- You may not start using another person's entry/bib or in an earlier wave than assigned.
- For your safety it is not allowd to use any form of audio during the race.
Backpack/clothing
All participants, regardless of class, must carry a 3,5 kilo backpack during the entire race, until crossing the finish line. The backpack must be visible, and can not be worn underneath clothing or bib.

- We recommend that you bring dry underwear and socks.
NOTE: Special rules for the content for UltraBirken cycle
Participants who has not got the requierd contents in their backpack before start, will not bee allowed to start until this is provided.
Packs will be checked.
Participants not complying with these requirements will be disqualified or given a time penalty.
If the participants have to put on a lot of the clothing/equipment throughout the race, due to bad weather conditions, the organizer will judge this with a common sense regarding the weight of the backpack.Equipment
- A certified helmet is compulsory.
- All bikes used in any terrain competition, should have only propulsion by human power. (Exception: the El-bike class)
- EL-bike is allowed in the EL-bike class in Birkebeinerrittet and HalvBirken cycle.
- It is prohibited to install equipment for time trial (ITT), road races or any kind of modification. (Exception: All-road classes)
- In the All-Road classes (men and women in Birkebeinerrittet 86 km), you can race on a bike with drop bars. NOTE: This is the only classes for drop bars. It is no Birkebeiner Medal in these classes. The tires must be at least 25 mm.
Environment
Littering along the route is not allowed. Please bring your own litter to the nearest food station or use the drop zones along the course. Littering along the course can be penalized with 15 minutes added to your time.
Violating the rules
Participants violating the rules will be disqualified or given a time penalty.
Complaints- The complaint must be submitted in writing with a fee of NOK 300 at the Race Office in Håkons Hall.
- Against race conditions: 15 minutes after the last competitor has crossed the finish line.
- Against the list of results: 30 minutes after the list and results have been published.

All participants age 13-79 must have a valid license to start in cycle events in Norway. If you have a valid license through national cycling federetaion, please bring your license card when retrieving your BIB.
Purchase
The license is not included in the entry fee. It can be purchased when entering, through your My Page, or at the race office when retrieving your BIB.

Birkebeinerrittet
Race packets for Birkebeinerrittet that is ordered to Lillehammer and not been retrieved in Lillehammer by Friday night, may be picked up in Åmot kulturhus Rena, Saturday morning.
On the raceday race packets must be collected at least 1 hour before your starting time. Allow for some extra time as traffic will be heavy.
Please show your starting card to testify paid entry fee, license and bib number.
In your race packet you will find
A tag with your wave number to be fastened at the back of your pack.
Your bib, that must be visible throughout the race.
Luggage tags for one item.

Traffic / parking
Birkebeiner.no
Parking is available in the area north east of Håkons Hall, and on Randgaardsjordet. Please follow instructions on signs and from parking guards. Tickets for parking on costs NOK 75,- and may be bought both online or on site.

Cycle service
We offer simple service such as changing of hose, chain, brake pads, as well as adjusting the gears and brakes before start and at the service stations along the track.

The service is performed by experienced mechanics.
It will be possible to clean (flush) dirt off your bike at the service stations.
We recommend that your bike is well maintained and checked before you arrive at Rena.
It is also important to bring some equipment for bike care in your backpack, such as hose, small tools and a pump. -
Bike parking
Bike parking
Free bike parking is available in the finish area. The parking is in a closed of area, and your bike is insured against theft while in the parking area. The parking area is open until 21.00
The owner of the cycle is identified by the starting number, and to retrieve your cycle from the area, you must bring your starting card, Birken-app, your wrist tag or your luggage tag.
It will be possible to clean (flush) dirt off your bike before you leave the area.
The bicycle park closes at 21.00 saturday.

The bike guides will offer information about the track, technical aid if needed, extra motivation and good company over the mountains.
The bike guides will be available in some of the unseeded waves and you will easily spot them with their yellow helmets and vests. -
Starting times and classes

All participants will be seeded independent of class.Exceptions are:
- The classes for Physically disabled, tandem, tandem disabled, Women 70+ and Men 80+ will start in wave 20.
- Unseedet W/M 17 and 18 years old start in wave 24
- All-Road starts in one wave (starting time will be given later on).
- El-cyckle starts in the last unseedet wave
All even numbered waves enter the green sluice before start. Odd numbered waves enter the red sluice.
Classes
Birkebeinerrittet use age classes for both female and male contestants, elite classes F/M Jr./Sr., All-Road men and women, tandem, tandem FH (disabled), disabled (FHM og FHK) and "Without time keeping". To participate in the classes for disabled you must provide a classification certificate from the Norwegian Handicap Association (NAD).Age classes are divided as follows: F/M 17 yrs, F/M 18-19 yrs, F/M 20-24 yrs, F/M 25-29 yrs, F/M 30-34 yrs etc.

In the tandem class both contestants may get their results registered. Both cyclist must then pay and register their participation, they must also carry a back pack weighing at least 3,5 kg.Assistance in tandem FH and FHK/FHM
Participants assisting physically disabled, which do not wish to have their results registered - does not pay for their participation. Assistants without time chip, may participate without complying to the back pack-weight limits, they must, however, bring extra clothes, foods, drink, tools and repair outfit.

Seeding / start waves
Dynamic seeding
Competitors will be seeded in waves according to results obtained in previous Birkebeinerrittet races or in races sanctioned for qualification.The fastest competitors will start first. Our intention is that all competitors should start in a wave where they qualitatively belong and thus compete with their equals.
The seeding will change regularly until the second/third week in August. After this date the information regarding wave and starting time will be final. All participants must log in to My Page, and print/download their starting card, which holds all information about wave and starting time. You need to show this card to retrieve your bib.
Allocation of wave 2020
Waves will be allocated on the basis of results in Birkebeinerrittet 2019, 2018, 2017, 2016 or 2015 or from races sanctioned for qualification in 2021.

Note that there are special rules for qualification for the Elite classes
For participants outside of Norway,
results from other races will also be assessed for qualification. Such results must be from 2021. If you want to reseed due to results from other races please send an e-mail including your Birken ID and link for the results to: seeding@birkebeiner.no as early as possible, but by August 24th at the latest.
If you want seeding from one of the qualifiaction races in Norway you must enter your Birken ID number when you register for one of these.
Participants with no confirmed qualification will be placed into one of the unseeded waves.
All re-seeding must be submitted by August 24th. -
Elite classes
Information and special rules for the Elite Classes
Age division
Senior elite: Age minimum 19 years old by 31.12.2021
Junior elite: Age 17 or 18 years old by 31.12.2021
Entrants in the elite classes and/or junior elite classes must hold a valid licence issued by a National Federation affiliated to the UCI, which must be presented on registration. If the licence cannot be used as identification, the participant must show another type of identification.

Your race packet contains two start numbers. The one that includes your time chip must be fastened on your handle bars according to instructions, the other must be fastened on your backpack.
Please note: If you are not wearing a timing chip, your results will not be registered.
Elite garment
Participants in the elite classes must wear garment approved by their team, and the NCF. UCI teams may use their official cycle garment.
The track
The course is appr. 86 km. See track description and map
Towards the finish area there will be special tracks for Men elite Sr./Jr. and Women elite Sr. / Jr. + women in wave 17.
Men Elite Sr./Jr.: The special track will close 45 minutes after the winner in Men Elite Sr. has passed the finish line.
Women Elite Sr./Jr + Women in wave 17: The special track will close 30 minutes after the winner in Women Elite Sr. has passed the finish line.
Technical assistance/feed zones
Feed zones are placed close to the ordinary food and drinking stations. Skramstadsetra, Bringbusetra, Kvarstad and Elgåsen. They are marked with signs – "start feeding zone" and "end feeding zone".
Technical assistance during a race is permitted subject to the conditions below. Technical assistance shall only be given in the feed/technical assistance zones. Authorized technical assistance during a race consists of the repair or the replacement of any part of the bicycle other than the frame.
Bike changes are not permitted and the rider must cross the finishing line with the same handlebar number plate that he had at the start. Spare equipment and tools for repairs must be kept within the technical assistance zones. Repairs and equipment changes can be carried out by the competitor himself, or with the help of a team-mate or team mechanic within the technical assistance zones. Outside the zones technical assistance is only permitted between competitors in the same team.
Competitors may carry tools and spare parts provided that these do not involve any danger to themselves or the other competitors.
Backpack 3,5 kg
All competitors mus carry a backpack weighing at least 3,5 kg. The backpack must be visible, and can not be worn underneath clothing or bib.

Birkebeiner Medal (merket)
There is a time limit based on the average time of the top 5 competitors starting in age classes (not elite classes) plus 25%, worked out separately for each class. Participants finishing within the limit for
the first time will receive a diploma and the "Birkebeiner Medal" silver pin.
Note: Competitors starting in Men and Women Elite, does not affect the Birkebeiner Medal time limit.

Prizes
All participants finishing the race recieves a participation pin just after the finish line. A diploma stating your time is also available. You must retrieve this inside Håkons Hall at the race day.
25% of participants starting in each class recieves a prize.
Ceremony
The top three in each age class recieve their prizes from the stage in Håkons Hall. Retrieve your other prizes, pins and diplomas at the prize desk inside Håkons Hall.
Participated 10 and 20 times
Participants that have reached the milestones of entering 10 or 20 times in Birkebeinerrittet recieve one gourmet dinner plate from our prize collection. The plate is ingravedPrize ceremony for the elite classes and junior classes take place outside Håkons Hall, Lillehammer, Saturday. Ceremony for women is at 13.00, and the ceremony for men is at 19.00. Anyone who wins the mountains prizes or the finish prizes must meet in order to receive prizes.
Results and the Birkebeiner medal
Participants in the elite classes will get results in both elite classes, and their age classes.
Exceptions: Participants in M45 and older, and W55 and older, will only receive results in elite classes.
Results in the elite classes do not affect the time limit for receiving the Birken medal. Participants in these classes will gain the medal if their results are within the time limit set by de top 5 participants in each age class.Prize ceremony for the elite classes

Luggage
Transportation of luggage from start to finish is included in the entry fee.
It is your responsibility to tag your luggage and hand it in to the truck labelled with your wave. Tags are included in your race packet. In the event of heavy rain, you will be given plastic bags to keep your luggage dry.
The trucks are on the parking area (Sømoen) east of Åmot kulturhus, Rena.
You will receive your luggage north of Kristins Hall (at the finish) in Lillehammer.
The organizers accept no liability for loss of baggage. -

Luggage transport
You can deliver your luggage at either at Håkons Hall before entering the bus to the start or in the starting area.Luggage labelled with your name and start number, will be brought from the start area to the finish area.
Luggage claim is north of Kristins Hall, Lillehammer. If it is raining we will provide plastic bags to keep your luggage dry.
Transport of luggage is included in the entry fee.
The organizers accept no liability for loss of luggage. -

The track varies each year.
Start at Pellestova, Øyer and finish line by Håkons Hall, Lillehammer.

The track is 100 km, 41,8% gravel, 1% asphalt and 58 % mountain track . Estimated winner time are set to 4.45.
Cut-off time at Storåsen at 18.00. -

Bus to the starting area
Bus to the starting area departs from Sigrid Undsets veg below Kristins Hall (Håkons Hall) Saturday morning at 07.00.
The ticket costs NOK 50,- and must be preordered at your My Page
Please park your car by Håkons Hall, and use the bus transportation to the start area.
Cycle transport
Cycles are transported in trucks following the busParking
Parking is available northeast of Håkons Hall and on Randgaardsjordet. Follow the signs to the designated parking area. There is a fee of NOK 75,- Parking tickets are sold on site.Bus back to Pellesova in the afternoon: 19.00 (preorder at My Page)

Special rules for UltraBirken cycle
For safety reasons there are special rules for clothes and equipment that you must bring when participating in UltraBirken:- Longsleeved jacket (wind-/water resistant)
- Long trousers (wind-/water resistant)
- Glowes/mittens with fingers
- Buff headwear
- Long underwear
- Dry socks
- Food
- Tools
- Bicycle pump
- Hose kit
- First aid kit
- Mobile phone
Participants that does not follow these rules might be disqualified.

Prizes
All participants finishing the race recieves a participation pin just after the finish line. All participants will also recieve a finisher T-shirt and a diploma stating your time. You must retrieve your T-shirt and diploma inside Håkons Hall on race day.
Ceremony
The top three in each age class recieve their prizes from the stage in Håkons Hall. -
Luggage
Luggage transport
Luggage labelled with your name and start number, will be brought from the start area to the finish area.
You can deliver your luggage at either at Håkons Hall before entering the bus to the start or in the starting area.
Luggage claim is north of Kristins Hall, Lillehammer. If it is raining we will provide plastic bags to keep your luggage dry.
The organizers accept no liability for loss of luggage. -

Race rules UngdomsBirken cycle
The race is run according to NCF's laws and regulations. In addition there are also special regulations for UngdomsBirken cycle.
- All competitors must have the Bib fastened visible on the handlebar.
- You may not start using another person's entry/bib.
- For your safety it is not allowd to use any form of audio during the race.
Backpack/clothing
All participants, regardless of class, must carry a 1,5 kilo backpack during the entire race, until crossing the finish line. The backpack must be visible, and can not be worn underneath clothing or bib.
The backpack must contain food, drink, tools and hose kit.Violating the rules
Participants violating the rules will be disqualified. -
Prizes

All competitors will recieve a pin when finishing. All competitors will also recieve a diploma and a prize in Håkons Hall on race day.
Ceremony
Prize ceremony for the three best in each age class will be held in Håkons Hall after finishing. -
Luggage
Start and finish are at the same area, and therefore there is no transportation of luggage for UngdomsBirken cycle.
We recommend that you put your extra clothes in your backpack.
