About Birken

History made the race
Birken AS is owned by the local sports clubs Rena IL, Lillehammer Skiklub, and Lillehammer Cykleklubb through the companies Birkebeinerrittet AS and Birkebeinerrennet AS.
Birken is a non-profit organization where all surplus funds are reinvested into local sports. The events are largely driven by volunteer work, with thousands of volunteers contributing annually to support their sports clubs. This makes Birken a key financial resource for teams and associations in the Innlandet region.
Birken’s legacy dates back to 1206, when two brave warriors, the Birkebeiners, skied across the mountains to save the infant prince Haakon Haakonsson. This historic journey inspired the Birkebeiner races, which today challenge participants in cross-country skiing, cycling, and running. Our sustainable events serve as training goals for recreational athletes, enthusiasts, and elite competitors of all ages.
The events are organized with a strong emphasis on volunteerism and community effort, ensuring inclusivity for all participants.
Vision: Building on our unique history, we create memorable challenges and experiences for everyone.
Values: Together for dreams, pride, and joy!
