Detailed course description – GravelBirken 200 km
Lillehammer – Bleka 0 – 52.2 km
The course starts from Birkebeiner Stadium and follows Birkebeiner Road towards Kantvegen. There you turn left and ride up towards the top of the ski jumps. From the ski jumps there is a downhill section. It is IMPORTANT to take it easy here, as you must make a sharp right turn at the bottom. From here you climb a wide trail back up to the stadium. Leaving the stadium, you reach Sjøsetervegen, a wide gravel road. After a few kilometers you turn off onto a smaller gravel road, which at times is rougher. When you reach the main road, ride a few hundred meters before climbing up to Nattrudstilen. This section is paved for a few kilometers, through the ski stadium, before turning back to gravel and down to Bleka. Here you ride a larger loop before returning to Bleka and the first aid station. This loop is about 23 km on wide, hard-packed gravel roads.
Bleka – Bringbu 52.2 – 80 km
From Bleka you face a steeper climb with rougher terrain. This road continues to Grimstilen, where you cross a small bridge. From there it’s a gentle descent until you reach Åstdalsvegen. Here the course climbs again before descending towards Bjørnåsbrua and later Prestsætra. From there, it’s only a few kilometers to Bringbu and the next feed station.
Bringbu – Kvarstad 80 – 98.5 km
Here you enter the Birkebeiner Trail. Leaving Bringbu, you follow a narrower gravel road that leads onto a larger road climbing up to Bjørnåsen. There is always a great atmosphere here, with spectators cheering along the trail. After Bjørnåsen you hit a trail section. It may be muddy but is fully rideable. After this, the course continues on wide, solid gravel roads all the way to Kvarstad and the feed station.
Kvarstad – Snultra 98.5 – 118.6 km
At Kvarstad you follow the regular Birkebeiner Trail past the feed station. The trail climbs slightly before descending back to Kvarstad. From here, you ride a wide gravel road and a long flat stretch towards Øvre Åstabru. After crossing the bridge, the course climbs towards Storstilen, where you once again join the Birkebeiner Trail and enter the legendary “Rosinbakkene” climbs. Just before reaching Aksjøen, you turn off the Birkebeiner Trail onto a singletrack section leading to Snultra. Here there is a short “hike-a-bike” where you must dismount to cross a stream using stepping stones. It is a slightly more technical trail, but still manageable on a gravel bike. At Snultra you will find another feed station.
Snultra – Hita 118.6 – 130.1 km
After Snultra you will finally feel like you are truly up in the mountains. You are now in the same area as the UltraBirken—please show consideration for other riders. Soon you reach Ytre Reina, where you turn left towards Pellestova. Here the course runs on wide gravel roads with spectacular views. At over 900 meters above sea level, you are in real mountain terrain. At Hita there is another feed station.
Hita – Korsen 130.1 – 153 km
This is one of the most beautiful sections of the course. With panoramic views and solid gravel roads, it’s a stretch to enjoy. The course joins Hornsjøvegen and follows it for a few kilometers before turning right onto a smaller gravel road. This eventually narrows further before joining Augsætervegen. You pass several scenic mountain farms in rolling terrain, leading down to Korsen and another feed station.
Korsen – Storåsen 153 – 176.7 km
After Korsen, the course climbs again towards Hornsjø. This is the last significant climb before the finish. From Hornsjø to Ytre Reina (second time) the terrain is rolling. Back at Ytre Reina you continue straight ahead. Reinavegen is a wide, hard-packed road, and you eventually turn left towards Mellsjøen. The roads wind around Mellsjøen before reaching Elgåsen and the final feed station. Take it easy on the downhill to the station, as you will encounter participants from the Birkebeinerrittet, Gravel 100, and volunteers. Speed bumps (chicanes) will be set up to reduce speed. From here, it’s only a few kilometers to Storåsen and Sjusjøen.
Storåsen – Håkons Hall, Lillehammer 176.7 – 200 km
After passing Storåsen, the course turns left by Sjusjøen cross-country arena. From here it follows the Birkebeiner Ski Race trail through an underpass. This section has been gravelled to cart-road standard. The course crosses marshland and descends gently before crossing Nordseter/Sjusjøvegen via another underpass, leading to Nybu. Here there is a one-kilometer stretch where speeds can get high. Follow marshal instructions and show consideration for other riders.
The course continues into Svartbekkvegen, where you ride about 700 meters before joining the old trail. After about 3 km, the course descends steeply into a sharp right-hand hairpin (180 degrees) at Avskåkålia and out onto Sjøsetervegen. This road towards the ski stadium is in poor condition, with potholes and washboard sections. Be cautious, especially in a group.
The course avoids the parking lot and follows the lighted ski track (lysløypa) from the stadium to where it joins VIP-vegen. This section is rolling, about 1.2 km.
You then ride about 800 m on gravel before hitting asphalt, where the course descends steeply with sharp turns to the top of Ballettbakken. The descent down Ballettbakken is long, steep, and gravel-covered. If you wish to dismount, keep far to the right. The course then loops around the ski jumps, descends a trail in Gamle Nordseterveg, and finally finishes at Håkons Hall (290 m a.s.l.).
200 km completed – you have finished the Birkebeinerrittet!
