On Friday, 13 March 2026, SkøyteBirken will be held for the sixth time, and this year we’re making Birken history! In 2025, nearly 1,000 participants (a new record!) lined up at the start, showing how quickly the race has grown in popularity. For the first time ever, a new Birken race will award its own Birkebeinermerke. This means you can now earn the merket in SkøyteBirken – a milestone for both the event and for everyone who loves free technique.

New in 2026: merketid and 5-year age groups
From 2026, SkøyteBirken will introduce both max time and 5-year age groups. The max time is calculated separately for each class by adding 25% to the average time of the five fastest skiers in that class (just like in Birkebeinerrennet).

This is the first time in history that a new Birkebeinermerke is introduced in a race other than the main event – a clear sign that SkøyteBirken has become an established and important part of the Birken family.

And for those seeking the ultimate challenge, this opens an exciting new opportunity: you can now earn two Birkebeinermerker in two days – by skiing SkøyteBirken on Friday and Birkebeinerrennet (classic) on Saturday.

Same course – new motivation
SkøyteBirken follows the traditional Birken course from Rena to Lillehammer (54 km), crossing three majestic mountains and passing through spectacular nature. Here, you’ll experience everything you love about Birken – along with the freedom of free technique.

With max time introduced in 2026, you now have a concrete goal to train toward throughout the winter. Test your form and go for the Birkebeinermerke in SkøyteBirken for the very first time in history.

For recreational skiers and elite athletes
SkøyteBirken attracts everyone from first-time participants to some of the country’s best cross-country skiers. Elite classes were introduced in 2025, offering FIS points and prize money, and this initiative continues in 2026. The goal is to create a race that combines the Birken spirit with high sporting quality – an event where everyone feels part of something big.

Part of the Birkebeiner Triple
Did you know that you can choose SkøyteBirken as part of the Birkebeiner Triple? By completing three legendary Birken events – on skis, by bike, and on foot – you not only achieve the Triple, but also save 40% on the entry fee when registering for all three at once. Note: Unranked alphabetical results.
